In the electrical industry, the practice of correcting the power factor by supply or connecting capacitors is widespread. This type of measurement is called a capacitor bank, which is designed or manufactured based on the reactive power of the electrical system.
The capacitor is a device formed by two conductive elements separated by a dielectric material, confined in a container or casing and whose purpose is to produce capacitance in an electrical circuit.
We can differentiate between fixed or automatic capacitor banks:
- Fixed capacitors are designed for applications where it is possible to dispense with a disconnection means, that is, to compensate for reactive energy at the machine, motors through the starter, among others. An external switch can also be placed either on the panel or in the external cabinet.
- By installing banks of automatic capacitors for power factor correction, enormous benefits are obtained, in addition to being an ideal economic and technical solution for power factor correction.
The automatic capacitor bank is mainly made up of a reactive power controller, which is responsible for connecting or disconnecting capacitive sections depending on the load demand, through contactors specially designed for capacitive loads, each section has individual protection by means of cylindrical three-phase power fuses and capacitors. There are series and capacities according to the needs that arise.
